ABLE Accounts

Georgia's STABLE program allows individuals with disabilities to save tax-free without losing government benefits.

What is a STABLE Account?

Georgia has established a STABLE account program (under the federal ABLE Act) for residents who have acquired or been diagnosed with their disabilities before the age of 26.

These accounts allow eligible individuals to save and invest money without affecting their eligibility for federal assistance programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Medicaid.

Eligibility Criteria

Do you identify with at least one (1) of these requirements?

  • Entitled to Supplemental Security Income (SSI) because of a disability.
  • Entitled to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) because of a disability.
  • Have a condition listed on the Social Security Administration's Compassionate Allowances Conditions list.
  • Able to "self-certify" their disability and diagnosis when opening a STABLE account.

Self-Certification Requirements

If you self-certify during your application process, you must comply with the following rules:

1. Physician Diagnosis: Provide a written, signed diagnosis from a licensed physician.
Note: Individuals do not have to upload a copy of the diagnosis during enrollment, but it must be available upon request.

2. Functional Limitations: Identify as either (1) blind, within the meaning of the Social Security Act, OR (2) having a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that results in "marked and severe functional limitations".
